Where to go dancing in Jerusalem: Salsa, Israeli, Clubs, Belly, and more

salsa dancer

Thank goodness there are places in Jerusalem to let go of my pent-up energy after long days spent staring at a computer screen. Unfortunately, I felt like the information for different kinds of dancing in Jerusalem like salsa, Israeli/folk dancing, clubs, belly dancing, and others was all over the place. So, I sat myself down and gathered what I could into one central, organized place (I love lists, what can I say?). Make sure to call the person or venue to verify any information below. If you would like to add any dance venues, please leave a comment below.

In related Salsa news, while I was searching for everything Salsa and Israel, I came across the 7th Annual Mediterranean Salsa Congress’ , which is hoping to create peace in Israel through salsa. If you’re still skeptical, just watch this clip. How come no one thought of this before?!

I’ve discovered there is Greek Dancing. They call it a club. Tues. nights at 6:30 pm at Yeshua Bin Nun 8. Cost around 20 shekels.

For further info, call: Greek Consulate 02-561-9584

http://www.m-tarbut.org.il is the website for Merkaz haTarbut haUmim, or ICCY, presently undergoing renovations. Their temporary head-quarters is The Nature Museum, Muzion ha Teva, entrance off Rh. haMagid. Telephone: 02-5664144

They are using different facilities in the meantime. At Beit Ora, Rh. Ibn Ezra 20, beside Emek haMatslava, the following is taking place.

International Folk Dancing with Motty Kotzir
    Wed. mornings between 10 – 11 am.

    Ballroom dancing on Wed. night.
8:00 pm beginners and 9:30 pm intermediate for 30 shekels.

Also, for pensioners, there are dance classes Wed 10:00 am beginners and 11:30 am intermediate/advanced. You can buy a card for 10 classes for 200 shekels, 15 for 110, or pay 25 each time
The dance class is called Rikud Kol HaZmunim.

At Merkaz haMagshimim, they are offering Israeli folk dance one night a week beginners 8-9 pm, Intermediate 9-10 pm. They seem to be offering it as a course starting: Oct., Jan. and May.

    Miriam,
Wow! Thanks for all the info – I guess I missed a few….

    Correction to the previous email:

Beit Hora (not Ora) has moved to: Merkaz Efron l’Muhol (dance) on Rh. Yehoshua Yuvieen 19 in Emek ha Matslava 02-6792653,
    02-6796552 http://www.hora-jerusalem.com , hojer@bezeqint.net

    ???? ????? ????? ?? ????? ????? 19 ??? ??????

Also, the two programs I described for Wed. mornings at 10:00 am are one and the same! So Motty Kotzir is the teacher of a program called Rikud Kol ha Z’munim, which I called Intl. Folk Dancing. Wed. 10 am for beginners, 11:30 for intermediate and advanced. Prices as described.

As well, Beit Hora has other dance programs which can be found on their website or in their brochure near the entrance to the building.

Sorry for the confusion. It seemed a miracle to me that I managed to find the right place, in time, by following people’s directions along the way starting with a construction worker at the old location.

There are buses that come close: 19 and 32 for sure on Rh. Herczog.

The question marks were the Hebrew translation of the location. Sorry, didn’t know the site wouldn’t take Hebrew.

I took my visiting Canadian cousin to Candela Club and it made her trip. She became a regular there 2x/wk till she left. I went with her the first time and they were very nice to this inappropriately dressed 73 year-old in the beginners’ class.

People dress very sharp and modern. It’s a nice place with good teachers.

Also, finally got to the Greek Club with another friend and it was lovely. We danced in the garden. They were very friendly and the dances were easy to pick up.

    Dear Pip Allon,

There is Contra Dancing, a form of square dance, monthly in Jerusalem. I found the information by going to http://www.contradancelinks.com and clicking on Israel. They also have a yahoo.group link on the site. Here’s the info:

    Feb. 15, March 1(Purim) and March 15th
at Kehilat Yedidya in Baka at 8:00 pm

Rh. Nahum Lifshitz 12, which is off Gad, which is off Rh. Yehuda.

there’s no dance in April because of Pesach and they’ll resume in May through Rosh HaShana on Thurs. nights.

  27. Posted by: Miriam Leah - 01/11/2010

Hi y’all, I see Howard Felson already posted in 2008 about the Contra Dancing. Check #1 on the list.

Regarding line dancing and swing dancing, Motti Kotzir has both as well as lots of other fun dances. Check it out on Monday evgs. at Mamilla Mall for free. During the Summer it’s outside by the amphitheatre and now it’s inside quite close by on the 2nd floor.

He has Wed.morning classes at the ICCY Matnas, 12 Emek Refaim from 10:30 on starting with easy dances. Also couple dancing Wed. evg. at the same location. Go to the ICCY website mentioned above for further details.

For women only Hebrew folk dancing, Naomi is teaching in the gym of a school in Baka. Check out the earlier postings above for all the details.
